Baby update – Alex is 8 months

Baby update – Alex is 8 months

So it is time for yet another baby update, only a handful left before I will be writing about Alex’s first birthday, slow down time please! Alex has come on leaps and bounds this months, he is mastering something new every other day. I have lost my phone this month though so there won’t be many day to day photos in this update as I am an idiot and didn’t back up any of my photos! So much has happened since Alex’s last update , I can’t wait to share it all with you.

Alex is 8 months

What does he looks like?

Size: I actually made it to baby clinic this month, I feel like a deserve a medal for remembering to go for once. Alex now weighs just over 16lbs, he is now following his line steadily on the graph again, he is just going to be smaller than his birth weight had us all believe. He is snug in his 6-9months clothes so I will be up in the attic again fining all of the next size clothes again before I know – I feel like I have only just put all the 3-6month stuff back up there.

Teething:  No more teeth this month, the two at the bottom have grown loads now and you can see them when Alex smiles and laughs. While his two little teeth are adorable they aren’t so cute when he bites my face (or my boob!) which he has been doing quite often. The dribble, red cheeks and screaming seems to have stopped recently so I guess his teeth are taking a break before the next one starts popping through.

Personality.

What he likes/dislikes: Alex is loving crawling everywhere this month, EVERYWHERE. We have had to set up Leo’s old play pen (otherwise known as baby jail) as without it I wouldn’t be able to do anything. Alex is really enjoying being mobile and playing with his toys, Leo’s toys are still his favourite though even though he knows he isn’t supposed to play with them, luckily Leo seems ok with it. The little waste paper bin in the living room in Alex’s favourite thing, I have tried to hide it in a corner but if I take my eyes off him for a second Alex will be crawling at full speed over to it and trying to pull all the rubbish out – ahh! Alex is also loving games of peek-a-boo, our weekly baby sensory sessions, going on the swings in the park and bath time is still his favourite time of the day. He has been quite clingy this month though and hates it when I leave the room or hand him to someone else, he has become a proper mummy’s boy which is both lovely and exhausting.

Character: Ok, so I hate to say this but this month Alex has become really whiney, clingy and a tad irritating at times. He wants me to hold him so much, if I try and shower or cook tea and he is sat in his bouncy chair he just cries and cries at me until I pick him up. I am sure this probably all normal and just a part of his development but it can be really tiring some days, especially when I have a lot to do. On the other hand though he is still his usual happy self. He loves to giggle and smile at how and gets really excited sometimes and lets out the most adorable little squeal. He has been really enjoying his stacking cups these past couple weeks and the look of pride on his face when he knocks them down is so heart warming to see. He is becoming a little cheeky chappy too, if I tell him not to do something (raid the bin, bash me in the face with his dummy) he laughs and just does it again! I can see the toddler days are going to be fun with this one.

The day to day.

Feeding: We are still breastfeeding around 4 or 5 times a day. Alex is still enjoying his first feed in the morning and his naptime feed around 10am but lately his afternoon feeds and the one before bed seem to be a bit hit or miss. He cries for the boob but then is only drinking for about 5 minutes before he starts doing some kind of weird baby acrobatics, trying to tip himself upside down with my boob still in his mouth – oow! Also, he has now decided that he does not like bottles at all, he has only hand a handful of them in his little life but we have never really had any problems. Now if we put a bottle anywhere near him he just screams his head off and won’t touch it, I guess this means I won’t be getting any time off parenting until he has stopped breastfeeding, unless you know of a miracle bottle we can try?

Weaning: Weaning is going really well, unless Alex is knackered he will pretty much eat anything. I have found myself relying on shop bought pouches a bit too often so recently I have been trying to be more organised and batch cook baby food and store it in the freezer for the week ahead. At lunchtime I usually give Alex a load of finger foods to try, he loves slices of bean, avocado, toast soldiers and banana the best. He will only really eat veg if it is pureed but I don’t care, at least he is eating it! This month I bought Baby at The Table: Weaning the Italian Way and there are some really great tips and recipes in there, I’d really recommend it if you’re feeling a bit clueless about weaning.

Sleeping: Sleeping has been better this month, Alex sleeps through pretty much always now. Naptime is about 10am every morning and once I have fed him Alex will usually get his head down for a couple hours. The problem is I can’t really ever get him to have an afternoon nap so by the time teatime rolls around Alex is an overtired, emotional wreck and I can’t get him to eat his tea. The last few days we have managed to get him to have about 20minutes kip in his pram around 4ish and it has really helped us avoid the mealtime meltdowns.

Who have we seen.

This is where I usually look back through my phone to give my memory a little jog on what we have done this month but obviously I can’t do that now! My in laws came to stay for a weekend so we all had a lovely time with them and my parents have also spent some time with us this month too. We have spent quite a few Saturdays with my sister and her kids and my nan stayed with us for a week too. So there has been lots of family time and Alex has loved seeing all his family, I am just sad I don’t have any of the pictures to prove it!

Where have we been.

With our National Trust passes renewed we have had lots of trips to Mottisfont and it has been lovely seeing all the roses taking over the walled garden. I love taking the boys to these places, they are always so beautiful and have lots of space for Leo to run around while Alex takes it all in from his pram. We have been to my sisters house a few times, we had a beautiful day out HighCliffe beach during the heatwave and have spent a lot of time in the garden enjoying the sun. We also took Alex and Leo strawberry picking and of course Alex had to sample a few on our way around the feel, he is obsessed with strawberries!

Brothers.

What does Leo think: Things between Leo and Alex have been a bit hit and miss this month. Now that Alex can crawl, climb and get around a lot more, Leo has got the impression he is big enough to play wrestle with and dive all over. Obviously this is not OK so I feel like I have had to spend quite a lot of time telling Leo off lately. There are times more often though when Leo is really sweet to his brother, asking to give him a hug and a kiss and laughing his head off when Alex does something silly. I am still trying to get Leo to tone down his displays of affection though as sometimes I genuinely fear he might knock Alex head off he dives in for a kiss that enthusiastically. Oli and I have noticed a bit of jealousy on Leo’s part this month, now that Alex is bigger and wants to play more it has been hard for Leo to accept that sometimes we will be sitting and playing games with Alex and not playing the games he wants to do all the time.

Sibling bonding: Leo and Alex are definitely growing into their roles of big brother and little brother. Alex loves to watch Leo’s every move and no one makes him laugh quite like Leo dancing around and singing does. Alex has also started climbing all over Leo and grabbing at him in a way that looks like he wants a cuddle. In the mornings Leo climbs in to Alex’s cot and sings songs to him, this would be cute but he does it while Alex is still asleep, meaning more Alex gets woken up before he is actually ready to start the day. There has been a bit of arguing over toys this month which is crazy, why Leo wants to play with the baby singing book when he has got a thousand toys of his own I will never know.

The little things.

This month has been full of lots of little first and moments I don’t want to forget.

  • Alex still loves to crawl on his belly but he can crawl up on all fours now too, he just doesn’t go as fast.
  • As well as crawling Alex has also mastered pulling himself up on to his feet, he stands up in his cot now when he wakes up from his nap.
  • I managed to get rid of all of Alex’s gross cradle cap by combing it all out in the bath and now he a head of lovely soft hair.
  • He is now capable of laughing hysterically and the sound is just the best thing ever.
  • At bedtime he doesn’t want to breastfeed to sleep anymore, he would rather I put him in the cot and let him cry/roll about for 5minutes without me fussing him.

That is it for this month, I will be back again when Alex is 9 months! At the rate he’s developing I won’t be surprised if he’s walking by then..

These photos are so adorable, he really is growing up so fast! With his bottle issue, Have you tried Yoomi? they’re fab for breastfed babies as the teats are more like boobs rather than standard bottles and they heat up to boob temperature, they work with bloggers too so you may be able to get it as a review to try out saves you wasting money incase it doesn’t work?
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week!
