Baby update – Alex is 2 months

Baby update – Alex is 2 months

My baby boy is now 2 months old (well 2months and 3days to be precise, blogging to a deadline is just impossible these days!) and he has changed so much since I wrote his one month baby update. Alex is moving further and further away from the newborn stage every day and is becoming a bouncing baby boy full of happiness and joy – most of the time anyway. Here is a look back on Alex’s second month of life and an update on how family life as a 4 is going.

Alex is 2 months

What does he look like?

Size – Alex is a little chunk, so much bigger than Leo was at this age. At his size week check he was 11lb4, at 9 weeks old I would say he has probably passed the 12lb mark now. He has gorgeous rools of fat on his legs and his cheeks are so squishy. Some of his 0-3 month clothes are already getting a bit snug and the size 2 nappies are only just fitting him still, my milk must be super calorific or something because my boy is just piling on the pounds.

Hair colour – I mentioned in Alex’s last baby update that I thought his brown hair was starting to turn ginger and it seems I was right. It is still not obviously red like his Dad’s or Leo’s but it definitely has that gingery tint to it. My hopes for a brunette baby have well and truly been stopped in their tracks!

Tiny toes

Eye colour – 100% blue, there’s no way they are going to be a different colour now. Whether they will continue to get brighter or stay a dark shade of blue remains to be seen. Alex does have gorgeous eyes though, I really do waste to much time gazing into them and adoring my little boy.

Personality.

What he likes/doesn’t like – Alex loves to have a kick around on his play gym listening to songs on his toy owl, if he can be naked when doing this then that pretty much makes his day! He also completely adores bath time, he can be screaming his head off but as soon as I plonk his little body into the warm water he transforms into the happiest baby ever. He love love loves Leo and is always smiling and laughing when his older brother is around. Alex is not too keen on being in the car if we are not actually moving, something that can’t be avoided thanks to traffic lights and traffic in general. He doesn’t like me putting his arms into T-shirts or jumpers, he would much prefer to spend his whole life in sleep suits. He is also not a fan of being fed under a cover or his dummy falling out of his mouth.

Cheeky chops.

Alex’s first freebie thanks to having a blogging Mummy!

Character – My boy is really chilled out, he only really cries if he is hungry or tired (or annoyed in the car!) and he is pretty easy to soothe. I feel like he cries a lot less than Leo ever did but then Alex spends a lot of time in a sling and apparently babywearing helps babies to cry less – I wish I knew this as a first time Mum! Alex is still super cuddly and smiley and he isn’t fussed by his big brother’s over enthusiastic displays of affecti9on at all.

The day to day

baby update

How we spend most of our time – cuddles on the sofa.

Feeding – I am still exclusively breastfeeding Alex, he had a bottle of expressed milk once last month but nothing since then. Feeding is going really well, there are no latch issues anymore and the only problem we are having is my annoying over supply of milk. Alex has just started smiling occasionally during feeds and sometimes he plays with my t shirt of puts his arms around me almost like he’s giving me a cuddle, it’s just the cutest things. Sometimes he makes little cooing sighing noises as he feeds, this is also too cute and I feel like feeding times are really strengthening the bond between us. You can find out more about our feeding journey by checking out my breastfeeding diary.

Sleeping – Ahh sleep, the thing everyone asks me about and the one thing I can’t stop thinking about. We are definitely getting more than in those first few weeks but still not as much as I would like. Alex is going to bed about 8pm now, after I have bathed him and Leo and Leo has gone to bed, and he then sleeps until about 1 or 2am. He will usually be awake for just over an hour in the night and then not wake up until around 6. The problem is, Alex would definitely go back to sleep after his 6am feed but recently that has been the time when Leo has come running into our room and made sure no one is getting anymore shut eye! It is hard having interrupted sleep and then having to start the day so early but it is no where near as bad as the 2 hourly we were enduring just last month. Naptime is still a bit erratic but Alex seems to enjoy a few short sleeps in the morning and tends to snooze the afternoon away in the sling or his bouncy chair – never the mosses basket! We haven’t had to co sleep at all this month as Alex will now happily sleep in his basket at night. I am so happy about this as I found having Alex in bed with us really nerve wracking and I could never drop off properly with him laying next to me.

So we haven’t actually had many visitors this month. My parents were here for a week which was lovely, my friend came up from London for the day and we also spent some time with my sister the other day. We have family arriving for Christmas later on today and will be seeing most of the family over the festive period. Although I love my friends and family it has been nice to have some quiet time to continue to adjust to life as a family of 4 and for us to all enjoy Alex to ourselves for a bit.

Where we have been

baby update

Father and son.

As it is December and Christmas is almost upon us we have not really ventured far this month. We have had several shopping trips into Southampton and have been to our local National Trust to do their Christmas trail but apart from that we have mostly been at home or hanging out at our usually toddler groups and the playground.

Brothers

What does Leo think? – This month Leo’s feelings towards Alex have been a bit all over the place. Most of the time he loves his brother and asks to kiss and cuddle him and talk to him about nonsense. However, there have been times where Leo seems annoyed and jealous towards Alex, he has never hurt him but will say that he wants me to stop feeding Alex or to put Alex down. Leo has even asked if his baby brother can go back in my tummy quite a few times so I think he is still adjusting to our new family dynamic. It is a big change for him and I am sure it is going to take a few more months for him to be completely settled as the older brother and no longer having Oli and I all to himself.

Cheeky boys

Fun in the park – one day too soon I will be chasing after both of them.

Sofa cuddles

Sibling bonding – Now Alex is smiling, giggling and cooing I can really see a bond starting to form between my two boys. When Alex smiles it makes Leo smile and if Alex does something hilarious (normally a really loud poo!) then Leo will get the giggles. If Alex’s dummy falls out Leo will put it back in and with a lot of prompting he will help get nappies for me or turn Alex’s singing owl on. They are all little things but it is clear than Leo really cares about his baby brother. As for Alex? Well he simply adores Leo, no one can make Alex smile as much as Leo and he loves watching his big bro getting up to mischief – they will definitely be partners in crime one day.

The little things

baby update

There have been quite a few firsts this month and moments I don’t want to forget.

* During his second month Alex learnt to laugh properly and make adorable little cooing noises and sometimes he sounds like he is saying mum!

* This month he started sleeping 7 hour stretches at night (occasionally!) and has spent a lot more time awake than asleep.

* He has discovered the joy of play time and loves spending time lying on his play gym.

* There was a morning where Leo and Alex were both lying in bed holding hands and it was just the cutest thing ever.

* Alex’s hair is getting longer on the top but it is really fluffy at the back so I think he’s going to get one of those funny little bald patches soon.

* He managed to stay awake for more than 5 minutes in the sling this month too so that’s a first and as it’s been December Alex has worn his Santa hat Every. Single. Day.

* I never want to forget how soft his skin feels when he’s resting his head on my chest or how cute he looks when he sleeps with his little arms up by his head.

That’s it for this month’s baby update, it’s Christmas Eve and I have a cheesecake to make and loads of presents to wrap! I will be back when Alex is three months old with hopefully lots more firsts to share and news that we are finally sleeping through the night – I can dream!

Have you recently had a baby or have a little one of a similar age? I would love to hear how you are getting on or to just have a chat about how much sleep deprivation sucks! If you also write baby updates feel free to leave your links in the comments below and I will pop over for a nosey.

I could barely believe when I saw 2 months!!! Wow! He is so beautiful, I love seeing the brothers together. How cute it must be to hear that little laugh. Makes me badly want another baby. Both my girls got strawberry hair and yet neither Steve or I have strawberry hair with both have dark brown, it took me until baby 3 to get a brunette. I am glad you are doing well and getting some more sleep. #TheList

How gorgeous is he?? I’m starting to feel broody seeing all those photos of baby snuggles too. Although my 8 month still isn’t sleeping through the night yet, so another one isn’t on the cards just yet. My son is also very chilled out and hardly cries. My daughter wasn’t, and still, isn’t that chilled! I definitely think their personalities start to come out early as a baby. #MarvMondays

gingery hair and blue eyes how wonderful! I have red hair and it didn’t come through in any of my children, I was so disappointed! funnily enough I had to wait until my eldest was 18 and growing a beard to spot this has a real auburn tinge. He also has blue eyes. I wonder what this little chap will look like at 18? He is so adorable and your photos are all so beautiful.
