Baby update – Alex is 3 months

Baby update – Alex is 3 months

That is it then, the newborn stage is officially 0-v-e-r and you know what? I am so sad about it all. Of course I love watching Alex grow and develop over the weeks but he has already changed so much from that squishy 8lb 6 baby I brought into the world just 13 weeks ago. Although my heart aches a bit when I see just how much he has grown already, I am so proud of my boy and I am pleased to report we all made it through the fourth trimester relatively unscathed. Here is Alex’s 3 month baby update and you won’t believe some of the news I have to tell you!

Alex is 3 months

What does he look like?

Size – Alex is a big boy! I still can’t get used to it after Leo was such a little thing (still is) but Alex is both chubby and pretty long too. Last time he was weighed at 11 weeks he was a whopping 13lbs; he is officially too big for newborn nappies now and we have just yesterday started dressing him in 3-6 month clothes. I absolutely adore his little rolls on his legs and his little wrists are so podgy – don’t get my started on his belly or his cheeks. He is so gorgeous though and babies are cutest when they are bit on the chubby side anyway right?

Hair colour – Still not sure, it is definitely getting lighter as the weeks go on and his eyebrows look ginger so I would say he is definitely a red head in the making. There is one of those funny little bald patches on the back of Alex’s head, it makes me smile every time I touch it – it’s so soft.

Teething – Oh yes, that does say teething. At about 9 weeks old Alex turned into a dribble monster and he hasn’t stopped since. This week his hands have constantly been in his mouth and his cheeks have been a little hot at times. He will seriously try and put everything in his mouth and sometimes he looks like he is chomping his dummy rather than sucking it. Leo’s first tooth cut at 4 months so judging by the way things are going I expect Alex will be getting his first fairly early too.

Personality.

What he likes/doesn’t like – Alex is still loving laying on his play gym and kicking around but now he is starting to grab at all the hanging toys too. He loves it when we play peek-a-boo and he really likes to rub soft blankets against his face. He is still a massive fan of bath time and enjoys getting water over the edge of his baby tub every single night (note to self – run shallower baths!). The dummy addiction is growing by the day but he will settle himself for naps with it so I don’t mind. Alex does not like being hungry at all, if I don’t feed him as soon as he gets a bit peckish he will scream the house down. I am very lucky to have such a content and happy boy, he only really cries when he is hungry or tired.

Character – Happy, relaxed and super chilled out..long may it continue!

The day to day

baby update

Feeding – All is going well on the feeding front. Alex will go about 2-3 hours between feeds now and whiles most feeds still last a good half hour, he is capable of gulping a full feed down in about 10 minutes if he is really hungry. We are currently in the middle of the 3 month growth spurt so he seems to feeding very frequently and for long periods of time at the minute but I am sure this will only be for the next few days. I will have more details on baby growth spurts in the next entry in my breastfeeding diary, coming next week. Alex had quite a few bottles of expressed milk this month, Oli has fed him a few times and when Oli and I had a date day on NYE the grandparents got to give Alex a bottle too. We were sent an electric breast pump from Lansinoh and this has made expressing so much easier.

Sleeping – Are you ready for this exciting news? ALEX IS SLEEPING THROUGH! I can’t believe my luck, he is the polar opposite of Leo who was still waking for night feeds at 9 months old. I am managing to get both boys in bed by 8pm at the latest (Oli helps a lot at bedtime too) and then Alex will sleep until Leo comes barging into our room at about half 6 in the morning. Alex first slept through the whole night the day of his 8 week immunisations and, apart from a handful of bad nights, he has done so ever since. I could never have expected to have a baby who actually likes his sleep so I am enjoying every minute of shut eye I am getting but also reminding myself it may not last – the 4 month sleep regression is looming on the horizon after all. Naptime is still pretty much decided by Alex, he normally dozes after his morning feed for about an hour and then has a few short naps throughout the afternoon. He knows when he is tired and is happy to soothe himself off to sleep in his mosses basket with his dummy or snooze in my arms or the sling after a feed. I feel so incredibly lucky to have such a good sleeper, please don’t hate me all you exhausted mummies out there.

Who have we seen

So with Christmas happening during Alex’s third month in the world we saw lots of people in December. For Alex’s first Christmas my in laws came to stay so both boys got to spend some quality time with their Nanny, Grampy and uncles. My parents also visited over the festive period, as well as my brother and we had a big family get together with all my siblings on the Christmas bank holiday. Alex and Leo also spent some time with their cousins this month too, nothing like Christmas and a new(ish) baby to bring the family together. My sister and her family came to stay last weekend so Alex got lots of cuddles from them too.

Where we have been

Well after all the excitement of Christmas we haven’t really done too much thanks too all the festivities draining the old bank account. For the family get together I mentioned we all headed to Avebury which was a nice day of food and a big walk around the henge. At the beginning of January we went to Lepe Country Park in the New Forest where Alex had his first trip to the seaside – he slept in the sling most of the time but he woke up in time to see the sea. There was a shopping trip to Winchester and we went searching for the Gruffalo in Alice Holt Forest. So it has been quite a slow month but has been nice just hibernating a bit in the house, cuddling on the sofa with my boys while watching films and eating our way through the last of the Christmas treats (we finally finished them last weekend!).

Brothers

What does Leo think? – After a few issues in those early weeks Leo seems to finally have taken to his new role as big brother. Most of the time he is far more interested in his toys than his little brother but when he does interact with him it is always really sweet. He does keep asking when will Alex be a big boy as he really wants to play games and show him all his toys, I can’t wait to watch them sitting playing together and chatting away.

Sibling bonding – Well Alex is still in complete awe of his older brother, his little face just lights up and breaks into a big smile every time he sees Leo. I can tell that as he grows Alex is going to be copying Leo’s every move so I am definitely going to have my hands full once Alex is a toddler. Leo is doing more and more things to help with Alex, he will wipe his face if he has been sick and will pat Alex’s back while I am burping him. He rarely ever wants to hold him but I guess sitting cuddling a baby is not really an enjoyable past time for my energetic 3 year old. The bond between these two is definitely growing but I know it is going to take time for that strong sibling bond to really flourish.

The little things

There have been quite a few firsts this month and moments I don’t want to forget.

a33      a35

  • Alex had his first immunisations and he SCREAMED the doctors surgery down and then had a whopping 4 hour nap after.
  • Alex slept through for the first time – hurray!
  • Alex is desperately trying to roll over already, every time I put  him on his back he rolls onto his side, I think give it another couple weeks and he will be rolling right over.
  • We started a Baby Sensory class
  • He started teething.
  • He can hold toys in his hands now…
  • Speaking of hands, he is obsessed with his, they are constantly either in his mouth or being closely scrutinized by his little curious eyes.
  • He is so loud! Alex does all the usual baby ooohs and aahs but he also makes this little excitable shriek quite often. I don’t remember Leo being so loud at such a young age.

So it has been quite a busy month for Alex and family life in general. I really hope things can carry on as smoothly over this next month and we all continue to get lots of sleep – I won’t be holding my breath though!

Aw this is such a lovely age! Leo looks like he is going to be a great big brother teaching him everything he knows. My two are (nearly) four and two. They are so close and loved watching their sisterly bond grow. With the smaller age gap (23 months) Ellie did like baby cuddles with her sister but then she did also learn that if she had cuddles I delayed her nap time… She isn’t silly!

Aw! Two super cute boys! My daughter is almost 10 months old and it’s so interesting to see how every baby does different things at different times. I also love to read posts about how siblings interact as one day that could be us! I love the zebra dungarees, baby clothes are the best!#KCACOLS

Such a lovely update Wendy! I just can’t believe he’s 3 months already! He is just gorgeous, and looks so smiley. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you that he keeps sleeping well too, Nerys was a really good sleeper to start with then we hit the 4 month sleep regression and it all went out the window! x #KCACOLS
