Creating your dream baby nursery

Creating your dream baby nursery

Creating a beautiful nursery for your baby is near the top of every mum to bes to do list, isn’t it? There is something so special about creating a space in your home just for your baby and decorating a nursery is a great way to satisfy your natural nesting instincts. When I found out I was expecting my second baby I knew immediately which room we would be turning into a nursery and once I knew we were having another boy I decided I wanted his bedroom to have a nautical theme. Turning our never been used, bleak and miserable junk room dining room into a cute nautical themed nursery took quite a bit of work, Alex is 3 months old and it still needs some finishing touches. However, creating your dream nursery for your baby can be really easy, with a bit of planning and organisation you can transform any room in your house into a bedroom fit for your little prince (or princess).  Here is my quick guide to making all your baby bedroom dreams come true…

How to create your dream baby nursery.

Choose a theme – Before you run off to your local baby store for furniture or go on a crazy online shopping spree for nursery accessories, you need to choose a theme. As I said above, we chose a nautical theme for Alex’s room but you could pick anything you like. Woodland creatures, butterflies, tractors, jungle, ballerinas, flowers, zoo animals – the list really is endless but once you have your theme in mind it makes choosing the right paint/curtains/wallpaper so much easier. Also, remember just plain colours can make for a really pretty baby’s room too if you don’t want to go all out there with a specific theme. If this is the way you want to go then it is a good idea to have a colour pallet in your mind first before you start slapping paint on the walls and then realise those curtains you ordered online aren’t going to match.

Get the room back to basics – So we decided to transform the dining room into Alex’s nursery and before we  could even look at a paint brush we had to empty all the old furniture out, dispose of it all and give the room itself a really good clean. I am so glad we did this and didn’t start trying to decorate or assemble furniture while we still had junk lying around. Having the room as a blank canvas helped us to see how much furniture we could fit in there and to really visualise what the room would look like when it was finished.

Decorate – Once the room is empty now is your time to get decorating. We went with baby blue for the skirting boards, door and windowsill and then plain white for the walls. I must admit, I did not enjoy the painting side of things and I may have had one or two tantrums over trying to stick masking tape around the window (can I blame my pregnancy hormones?!). If you are not a dab hand with a paint brush either you could always call in an expert to give you a hand. A great way to find local service professionals is to check out Bidvine, you can find anyone on there from painter and decorators to people who can safely attach all your nursery furniture to the walls and childproof your whole house for you.

Plan where the furniture is going and get building – Once your baby’s room is looking all adorable with it’s freshly painted walls or cute wallpaper plastered up, you are now ready to start getting the furniture sorted. I found it best to sit and draw out the room and sketch where I thought each bit of furniture would look best. This worked well along side just standing in the room and trying to visualise everything in it’s place. You don’t want to build all your furniture and then try and move it around until you find it’s perfect home, it’s best to know where things are going before you have a wardrobe, a cot and a changing table all crammed into the middle of the room with no idea where they will look best.

Accessorise – So you have checked pretty much everything off your list and now it is time to accessorise your room and add those finishing touches. For Alex’s nautical nursery we bought some cute whale curtains with matching bunting and cot blanket from Dunelm. We also painted some of our old chest of drawers a dark blue to go with the sea side theme and had a relative create some cute cushion from some boat patterned fabric. For Christmas we got Alex some small wooden blocks with an anchor, a pirate ship and an A on them and I am planning on buying him some canvas storage boxes with whales on them for his toys. I am also going to get some boat wall stickers, frame some seaside pictures and striped fabric and, obviously, get Alex a little whale soft toy too. It really is the little things that make a baby’s nursery so special and personal and whatever theme you go for there will be accessories out there to help you make it perfect.

Creating a baby nursery doesn’t have to be stressful at all, in fact, apart from the issues with the stupid masking tape I really enjoyed transforming our dining room into a bedroom for our little man. I can’t wait to see him play and explore in there as he grows and one day, all too soon, see him curl up in his cot for the first time and watch him sleep as he dreams of whales, ships and pirate adventures.

Are you pregnant and planning your baby’s nursery, what theme are you going for? If you already have a baby, did you enjoy decorating your baby’s bedroom or did you call in a pro to give you a hand? What is your all time favourite theme for a baby’s bedroom? I would love to hear your thoughts.

If you have enjoyed this post and found it useful I would love for you to share it on social media and with your pregnant or new mummy friends.

We moved when my daughter was 8 months old. Until then her room was in the corner of our spare room / study. We never personalised it or spent any time in there. I was really excited to make her room her own when we got into our new house. She doesn’t have a huge room and it has recently been painted white so I decided to keep the blank canvas and brighten with colour. I used animal and flower stickers. Then when she got a bit older and we took the sofa bed I had previously used for feeding her out, I added colourful cushions and bean bags which she loves! Sounds like you’ve had a great time sorting Alex’s room. He’s going to love it. #DreamTeam

Sounds like you really enjoyed creating your sons nursery. We didn’t do any of that for our daughter! She slept in our room for 4 months and we had to move house! We decorated her room when she was 2, then we picked blue because she loves it, and some butterfly curtains and stickers, because she loves them! I understand how it can be special to create a room for your baby on the way, for me it didn’t make sense, I wanted to wait till she knew what she liked! But I might just be a bit lazy and not want to decorate twice! #fortheloveofblog

As you know I love decorating, and there is nothing more fun than decorating a nursery. Obviously my nursery decorating days are over, but I still love hearing what others have done and seeing pics of gorgeous baby rooms. Gorgeous post xx #mg

We went with a forest theme and I don’t regret it. It was a lot of work but so worth it. I love the way it turned out. #FabFridayPos

I’ve always dreamed of doing this but have never had the chance – we lived in a one bedroom flat when BB was born and still only have two bedrooms, so baby number two & three have had to fit into existing space… #ablogginggoodtime
