7 things you can try to settle your crying baby

*collaborative post*

As a mum of three I am all too aware that babies cry..a lot. Out of my three children, my youngest Tilly has been the biggest crier. It is so overwhelming when your baby is upset and you can’t stop them from crying. Sometimes it feels like you have tried everything and they just won’t settle. I know mama, I know how hard that is. Tilly is one now and sometimes I still don’t know why she is crying and it is hard to settle her. I think it is just one of those things, some babies just cry more than others. If you are a new parent and are looking for some ideas on how to soothe and settle your crying baby, this guest post has lots of ideas for you. One of the main pieces of advice I would give to new parents would be to remember that babies are all different. The method your best mum friend uses to settle her baby may not be the one for you and your baby. Something else I have learnt is, although it may feel like it at the time, no baby is going to keep crying forever. You will be able to settle your crying baby, I hope these tips help you find a method that works for your family.

7 simple things to try to quickly settle your crying baby.

Soothing a baby that won’t stop crying can feel like an impossible task. When you’ve barely had any sleep and you’d do anything for 5 minutes of peace, trying to think of a way to soothe them can be tough. However, there are some extremely effective methods that you can try – read on for some of the fastest methods to settle a crying infant.

Swaddle your baby

Swaddling your baby makes them feel cosy and secure and nearly always makes them stop crying. Doing this makes them feel like they are back in the womb and is very comforting for them.

Use a front pack carrier

Wearing your baby in a front pack carrier and walking around could be a great way to soothe them. They will enjoy feeling close to you and the rhythm of your steps. This is also massively convenient as you may be able to get a few things done with your hands free. They may not like it at first, but don’t give up – many babies eventually come around to the idea. You’ll love being able to simultaneously soothe your baby and get a few things done. Maybe you could even read a book!

Use white noise

White noise is created by numerous things that you can probably find: the car, a hairdryer, a vacuum, a fan, and even videos on YouTube. This can also remind them of the womb and can be more relaxing to them than a lullaby.

Sing to your baby

Many baby’s love the sound of their mother’s singing – it doesn’t matter if you’re off pitch, key, or just sound like a wounded animal. Your baby will appreciate it and they are nearly always soothed by their own mother’s dulcet tones.

Give a baby massage

Baby massage can help to soothe both you and your baby and is a nice treat for them from time to time. There are many tutorials on how to do this safely, but you should also be able to find classes and workshops showing you suitable technique. The key is to be firm enough that the baby does not feel tickled!

Go outside with them

Get outside and have a change of scenery. This is another great way to wear your front pack carrier, as you can both get out and enjoy the fresh air and stay active. Maybe your baby just needs to get out of the house for a while.

Figure out if they’re unwell

You know your baby best, so if they won’t stop crying, figure out if they’re unwell. You may simply need to use paracetamol for infant, but you should always pay attention to their symptoms first. Some babies might not even cry if they are unwell. Some will simply not respond to their environment, but this can be equally as scary and stressful! Act quickly if you can tell your baby is not their usual selves.

Great post. The white noise and singing to baby worked pretty well for my 3 month old. She’s awake more often now and it’s harder to get her to sleep.
