My nappy bag essentials – featuring Sudocrem Care and Protect review

It is no secret that once you have a baby your home becomes inundated with baby related paraphernalia. Wipes, baby grows, knitted blankets, bottles, cotton wool buds and so much more, every room of your home is littered with the stuff. When you decide to venture out with your little bundle of joy you will have to take quite a lot of stuff with you, essential items to help you and baby make it through the day in one piece. But what to pack in your all important changing bag? Pack too much and you end up with a sore shoulder and a bag bursting at the seams. Don’t pack the right things and you can find yourself facing a poonami without the correct tools in your survival kit. Packing a nappy bag is all about trial and error and after making several errors when Leo was a baby, I now feel I have learnt from my mistakes and know exactly what qualifies as a nappy bag essential. So, here it is, a list of changing bag must haves especially for you parents-to-be or those of you with a new baby who are still packing everything bar the kitchen sink in your changing bag..

My nappy bag essentials.

Nappies – OK, this one is obvious. For my newborn I make sure I have at least 8 nappies for a full day out. It sounds a lot but babies wee and poo loads and you don’t want to get caught short. As your child grows you can get away with packing less. I tend to use Aldi’s Mamia or Little Stars from Asda but it is worth shoppping around a bit and seeing which brands work best for your baby.

Packet of wipes – It is amazing how many wipes you can get through in one day. If I am going out I always make sure I have a packet of wipes that is at least half full, there’s nothing worse than removing a pooey nappy to discover you have run out of wipes.

Outfit change – For my 3 year old I always make sure I have a spare pair of pants, trousers and socks in case of any accidents. For my newborn I will always have at least 2 vests and 2 baby grows in my bag in case of any nappy explosions.

Muslin cloths – These are so handy and so versatile too. I use muslin squares for cleaning up sick, as a breastfeeding cover, a changing mat and blanket. You can fold them up really small so I always try and have at least two clean ones tucked away somewhere in my bag.

Nappy rash cream – There is nothing worse than seeing your little one in pain and a sore bum can be really unpleasant for your baby. For Leo I always used Sudocrem antiseptic  cream and rarely did we have to deal with any nappy rash. This time around with Alex I am using Sudocrem Care and Protect at every nappy change and so far we have had no problems. You only need to use a little bit of cream at each change as a small amount really does go a long way, it will take a while for you to get through a whole tube. What makes Sudocrem Care and Protect such a good nappy rash cream is the fact it not only helps cure a sore red bum but it also works to prevent a rash occurring in the first place.

Care and Protect has a triple action formula that protects against infection by creating a barrier over your babies skin and also conditions your little ones delicate skin too. I am very impressed with this ointment and Alex seems to find it quite soothing when I apply it too which makes changing time a lot less stressful. There has only been one occasion where I have discovered a little red bum during a change but after putting on some Care and Protect the tiny rash was gone by the time Alex was ready for a new nappy.

Fragranced nappy bags – Breastfed baby poo doesn’t really smell that bad but once you start weaning your little one things start to get really stinky down there. Nappy disposal bags are so cheap and they are useful for popping dirty clothes in too, I think you can get about 300 for less than a pound in most supermarkets.

Snacks – I always like to have some emergency snacks in my bag for me and my toddler. When Alex starts on solids I will make sure I have something for him to eat in there too, you never know how long you’re going to be out and having a hungry child on your hands is no fun at all!

And that’s it, apart from the obvious phone, keys and purse! I pack quite light though so in order to get a more detailed list I turned to my fellow parent bloggers to find out what their nappy bag essentials are. Here is what they had to say..

Ayse Arepops –Spare change, just in case!

Bethany Being MummyA secret stash of chocolate and snacks you can munch when the kiddies aren’t looking!

Dani This Woman’s Word – A change of clothes and a wetbag for the LO just in case he does an explosive poo while we’re out!

Expecting Babies – Anti bac gel for those change on the go moments.

Amy Amy and TotsPack of crayons and a little notepad for while we’re getting something to eat.

Lisa The Irish Baby Fairy Hand cream for me with all the hand washing at nappy stops. Also an empty plastic bag for wet/dirty clothes is handy. And I always have a tube of Calgel floating about.

Hannah East Sussex MummyAnti bac hand gel.

Jaymee The Mum Diaries Antic bac gel, hair band and snacks for kid.

Wigan Mum Spare socks for both of us. In case we end up at soft play or at a group where you have to take your shoes off.

Lucy Lucy’s Locket Lip balm for me and a teething necklace.

I hope this list helps you to pack your baby’s changing bag, it is easy to think you need to take the whole house out with you but really you don’t need as much as you think!

What is your number 1 nappy bag essential? Is there anything else you would add to this list? What nappy cream do you use on your little one, have you tried Sudocrem Care and Protect? I would love to know your thoughts.

I love sudocream, especially the care and protect and it doesn’t leave the same scary white marks everywhere – win win! Finally though with a one and two year old my changing bag is getting a little bit smaller and lighter! yay for that, perhaps one day I will get my handbag back hehe. Thanks for sharing at #familyfun xx

Sudecreme is the best, couldn’t live without it! Got a few tubs kicking around the house I use it myself sometimes! I don’t tend to take much out with me and don’t have. Designated nappy bag because I change regularly what I take out! Thanks for linking up to #familyfun

I’m living proof than you CAN have too much sudocream… everyone bought me huge tubs when the kids were born – it’ll last till they have kids! Still use it all the time though, for sure bits, spots, cuts and scrapes.
