A very cakey day at The Cake College

A very cakey day at The Cake College

I love cake. I mean, what’s not to love right? Cakes look amazing, taste amazing and there is no way you can be in a bad mood if you’re eating cake. Gosh, I love cake so much I even revealed my baby’s gender by baking cakes! When my Mum said she had booked to go on a celebration cake decorating course, I asked if I could come to as, although my bakes normally taste good, I wouldn’t ever describe my cakes as pretty. So last Saturday morning we got up bright and early and headed off to The Cake College in Berkshire for a day full of cakey fun.

Celebration cake decorating course at The Cake College.

As we were driving up to the cake course, neither Mum or I knew what to expect. Would we be the most novice people in the class? What if the lady running the class used cake decorating terms only the likes of Mary Berry would understand? We had no need to worry though and as soon as we arrived we were greeted by Natalie and Lucy who were running the session from Lucy’s gorgeous countryside home. We were made to feel right at home straight away and the whole class was super friendly and relaxed.

I am not going to write about every little thing we did as the class lasted from about 10 until 6ish (we overran a bit) so I would be here for ages and, anyway, I don’t want to reveal all of Natalie and Lucy’s cake decorating secrets. So instead, here are some pictures and highlights from our day, I hope you enjoy them and they don’t make you too hungry.

The cake college

We started our day sat at a big table full of all kinds of cake decorating tools, most of which I had no idea what to do with. This is where we all sat and  created all our lovely decorations for our cakes. Natalie showed us how to make a cute teddy bear, bunting flags and a patchwork blanket. All of these were made from fondant icing which we were taught how to colour ourselves. I decided on a baby blue theme for my very own boy(s) and creating my little teddy was my favourite part of the day.

I totally know what these are for now…

The Cake COllege

These paint brushes are NOT for doing some kind of painting with food colouring like I originally thought. They are for putting edible glue on things, obviously..

Natalie was great at demonstrating what to do and made her instructions easy to follow, even for complete beginners like me. I did struggle with putting the buttercream all over the outside of the cake as I had never done it before. With a little help though I got there in the end, Lucy and Natalie have no problems answering questions and giving you a hand if it’s needed. I also found putting the white fondant icing on top of the cake quite daunting but we managed to get it on there with no major disasters.

Can’t remember what was so funny? Natalie makes putting icing on the cake look like the easiest thing ever! (Image from The Cake College Facebook Page)

Once the cakes were successfully iced and all our decorations were made it was just a case of putting it all together. I found making the patchwork blanket very therapeutic, even though cutting out all the squares before hand was pretty time consuming. Mum had a bit of a nightmare with one of the tools for making the bunting ‘rope’ so she improvised and made her own pink version. All of the finished cakes looked amazing, it was fab to see how everything came together after our long day. If you check out The Cake College on Facebook you can see everyone’s masterpieces but  here are mine and Mum’s..

Mum’s colourful teddy cake..

Mum and I had a brilliant day on the celebration cake decorating course. Natalie is a great teacher and Lucy was really helpful and friendly too. We came away from the class feeling like we had learnt a lot and we each had a beautiful cake to show off to everyone waiting at home. If you like baking and would like to learn how to get a bit more technical then I can’t recommend this course enough. The Cake College run all kinds of classes and Mum and I have already booked ourselves onto the vintage cupcake course next month. What can I say, we just love cake..

Have you ever been to a class like this? Are you a fan of baking or would you rather pop to the shop and just buy one? I would love to know your thoughts on my teddy bear cake 🙂

P.S – As well as running her cake business Cuppies n Cream and teaching at The Cake College, Natalie also write a blog Hello Cuppies. If this post hasn’t made you want to run to the kitchen and bake a cake, the Hello Cuppies blog definitely will.
