If you’re feeling old, don’t read this blog – Guest post From Tum to Mum

Today I am super excited to feature a guest post from the fabulous Rhian who blogs over at From Tum to Mum . I am not going to spoil the post for you but I will say this..it’s friggin’ hilarious and oh so very true. As the title warns, if you’re feeling old you should definitely continue reading with caution..

If you’re feeling old, don’t read this – Guest post by From Tum To Mum.

I’m sat in Costa coffee, with my almost 2 year old and it’s finally happened.

It happened right here in public, without warning.

Well, actually that’s not technically true; it’s been coming for a while.

I’m not talking about finding grey hairs or the odd bit of wee slipping out when I sneeze.

No, I am talking about the sudden realisation that I am officially old.

via GIPHY

I am surrounded by teenagers all using better smartphones than me, using apps I haven’t even heard of.

The tacky music they are playing on their mobiles has never before reached my ears. Possibly because I don’t listen to CRAP FM.

Their makeup makes my attempts when I was a teenager look laughable. Clear mascara and pressed powder? Pah!

For goodness sake, they are using WORDS that I don’t even understand.

“That is so on fleek.”

What’s probably worse than all of this, I cannot for the life of me put an age to them. Are they 12, 15 or 24?

I switch on Radio 1 and I find the presenter irritating.

I read a gossip mag and I have no idea who the ‘celebrities’ are. Gigi who now?

I look blankly at the run down of new housemates entering Celebrity Big Brother.

I look disapprovingly at bigger kids playing on the park and the language they sometimes utter near my toddler.

I look at what teenagers are wearing, and although their outfits are probably more expensive and more on-trend than me, all I can think is that it all looked s**t when we wore them in the 90s. When, I’d like to point out, Primark did not exist so we wore whatever Tammy Girl stocked. All of us. Without any alternative other than Kappa tracksuits.

So here’s the thing… The memories of learning to drive (and drink) at 17 years old seem like the other day, but I am actually now 34 years old.

I don’t think that’s particularly old, but it is twice the age I still remember fondly and today, my daughter is now closer to being 17 years old than I am.

I got my first Saturday job 19 years ago. I started university 15 years ago. I started my career 12 years ago.

I suddenly feel very old.

So am I OK about it?

The time that has passed gave and took away from me people that I love dearly. Against my wishes, it will continue to do so no matter how much I want to stop it.

But it’s also changed my life forever.

Without the passing of the last 20 years, I wouldn’t be me. I wouldn’t have experienced moments that I am proud of (and less proud of), I wouldn’t have made memories that I have already forgotten, I wouldn’t have met my husband, I wouldn’t have had the wedding day of my dreams, and I wouldn’t now have my own family.

I wouldn’t have a lot of life experience to offer my daughter, or a lot of confidence in myself as a parent.

I guess the moral of my ramblings is that although we may sometimes wish to go back to special times, we have to look forward.

We have to continue to grow.

We have to embrace the new phases of our lives and appreciate them for what they are.

We have to realise that we and the world around us continues to change beyond our control, and that it all happens very quickly.

Our aim has to be to make the most of it every second, not take the special people around us for granted, and not trying to wish our lives away too quickly.

Our littles are only little once, and I for one don’t want to miss a moment.

Before we know it, another 17 years will have passed and we will be in our 50s…

Thank you for this brilliant post Rhian! I am 25 but I can really relate to this, I actually just had to Google what ‘on fleek’ means. Anyone else feeling like Rhian? I couldn’t agree with her final points more and I don’t want to miss a moment of my children growing up, as we all know too well that time goes by way too fast. Radio 1 was never the same after Chris left. Love this post! Great writing… And I’m relating far more than I’d like to admit!

My teenagers say “bant” alot as in “such good banter” Why can’t they add the last two letters? Yes and before I knew it I am 3 months from turning 50 and feeling SO OLD. Make the most of the next two decades!!!! #bigpinklink

I’m going to be 30 next month! Aaargh! I have no idea what “on fleek” means (and neither, apparently, does my phone as it keeps auto-correct-ing it to “clerk”). But at least, as you say, we’ve got some life experience to pass onto our kids (mostly in the form of past mistakes!)

Haha this is me! I am 36 and feel about ninety in comparison to the teens of today! My eldest is 12 and the things he comes out with is like a foreign language, the worse being bae. What?? #bigpinklink

  5. October 3, 2016 / 11:04 pm

Haha this did make me chuckle! At 36 I still remember being 16 as thought it was yesterday and am also terrified of ageing when I see elderly people in rubber shoes and elasticated trousers. At the same time, life definitely gets better with every year that passes so maybe 90 will be amazing! #mg

OH yes! I am going to be 40 next year and I still feel like I just graduated college a few years ago… when in reality it was 15 years ago. Time sure is flying by and I still feel pretty young… until I’m near someone in their 20’s and I realize I am not young. But you know what? I wouldn’t want to be either. I like where I am in life right now and would not change these last few (20?!) years for anything.

Loved this! I’m 31 and the realisation that I am growing older… But I am OK with that. My teenager keeps saying to me ‘That is so on fleek’ No idea what it means. Recently learned that ‘That’s sick’ is apparently a good thing and indeed not actual sick! Haha. I really am getting old #TwinklyTuesday

Loved this, especially the part about not being able to tell how old youngsters are these days! I honestly can’t tell half the time. I just know that the freshers at Uni where my husband works look so, so young to me! x #TwinklyTuesday

Err old. Hmm. I’ve got a DECADE on you! But I know how you’re feeling with teenagers and their technology, people who are considered celebs. But that getting old feeling – it’s in your head and you have to shake free! Cut it loose! #TwinklyTuesday

This is excellent, and I totally agree with it all!! Right up until the year I got pregnant, I would drive home from work with radio 1 blaring, read all the fashion magazines for the latest must have buys and trends, and rarely had moments where I felt old. But just before I went on maternity leave, like Rhian, radio 1 annoyed the heck out of me (one of my last days at work coincided with Chris Moyles leaving radio 1, and I cried like an idiot,) then I had to switch Nick Grimshaw off, and drove home to radio 4. I’ve lost my figure, don’t have time for reading magazines, but have also never felt so content and confident in my whole life! And I pick out clothes I love in shops, with zero regard to whether they’re fashionable, because the young girls today all look like clones, and I’d rather look quirky. If that makes me old, I love it!!

It’s so true. Kids these days look 10 years older than they actually are. It’s terrifying. I used to get really upset at birthdays. I hated getting older. My last birthday saw me turning 30 and I think I took it rather well. I have realised that ageing isn’t a bad thing, it’s a privilege, so each birthday, from now on, I shall embrace! #bloggerclubuk

I was 35 this year and totally relate to absolutely everything that you have written! I love your optimism. As part of me wishes I could be in my 20s again, deep down I wouldn’t change a thing. Thirties are cool right?! Or should I be saying ‘sick’?! #bloggerclubuk

Oh yes, I definitely gave evils to the teens in the play area last week after they dropped a C-bomb near my kids, and possibly uttered ‘Don’t they have anywhere better to be?’ #OLD

Love this. I’m nearer 40 than 30 and definitely out of touch with the teenagers. I still think of the 1990s as being about ten years ago, and I can relate to finding Radio 1 presenters irritating and having no idea who “celebrities” are. But I agree with you too about we have to continue to grow and embrace the new phase of our lives – I’m certainly much more comfortable in my own skin now than I ever was in my 20s. #coolmumclub

Fantastic post, exactly what I think to myself around teenagers these days! I’m now 33 and my eldest will actually scarily enough BE a teenager next year. I feel old at times, but I feel lucky to have been able to reach this age, to have my amazing children and boyfriend… the years have been kind really – even if they haven’t been as kind on my forehead 😉

Thanks for linking up to #Picknmix

I definitely feel like this! I have a 11 yr old girl who is going on 20 and an 18 yr old boy/man who tells me I am old all the time lol. I don’t understand half of what they are going on about and I’m definitely going to stick to the rock music I grew up on.
