5 podcasts to binge on the beach this summer

Podcasts are my new favourite thing, they are the most perfect form of entertainment for busy mums like me. I love that I can be getting on with the housework and be listening to a podcast. Or, instead of my brain dissolving through sheer boredom from watching another episode of Peppa Pig, I can sneakily have one of my headphones in, listen to something interesting but still be cuddled up next to the kids (who are totally clueless that I’m not as invested in Peppa’s first ever sleepover as they are!). On long car journeys, when the boys are asleep, instead of listening to the radio, Oli and I listen to podcasts that make us laugh, make us think and inspire us – soo much better than radio 1! If you are off on holiday this summer, with the kids or without, and need a breather from your summer read, why not pop a podcast on? Holidays are of course for making memories with your kids and being present but you deserve a break too and if your break takes the form of half an hour, lying back in the sun with your headphones in, here are some of my top podcast recommendations for you to listen to on the beach.

For the mum chat – My absolute favourite podcast for all things parenting is Not Another Mummy Podcast hosted by blogger Alison Perry. Alison has a different guest on each week and she interviews them about various parenting topics, there is everything from pregnancy to mum guilt, to the lack of motherhood diversity shown in the media. If you want to pretend you are back at home just having a good old chin wag with your mum friends then this is the podcast for you. There are over thirty episodes so it is perfect for binge listening.

For inspiration – If I am ever in a creative funk that I can’t get out of, I listen to Sara Tasker’s Hashtag Authentic. There are over fourty episodes full of interviews, advice and inspiration to help you with your online creative business. Sara is an absolute Instagram genius and I love listening to her talk about how to grow your feed and I also love when she interviews amazing writers, photographers and other people who have managed to create the dream job thanks to the internet. If you are a creative person or just really love the online world then this one is a must listen.

For the chill time – If you are looking to really relax and drift away whilst listening to a podcast then I recommend Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. Kirsty Young interviews all kinds of different celebrities (seriously everyone from David Beckham to Stephen Hawking has been on there!) and they talk about careers, life, love, everything. The main point of the show though is for the celebrities to choose the songs they would want to have with them if they got stranded on a desert island, Kirsty asks them to explain their choices and then plays the track. There are hundreds of these to listen to and there is no podcast more apt for enjoying on a beach holiday.

For the story – Ok, I know everyone has probably listened to this one already but, just in case you haven’t, I am going to include it in this list anyway. If you want a true life, gripping, I-need-to-know-what-the-hell-actually-happened story then you need to listen to Serial. This podcast launched way back in 2014 and is about a man called Adnan Syed who was convicted of murdering his ex girlfriend in the 90s when they were still in high school. American journalist, Sarah Koenig, interviews Adnan via telephone conversations to his prison and she digs deep into what happened by looking back over evidence and talking to the people who knew Adnan to try and figure out if he has been wrongly convicted. Serial is perfect for bingeing because you physically won’t be able to stop yourself from pressing the ‘play’ button for the next episode.

For the LOLS – There are so many funny podcasts out there and it is hard to choose just one. If I want a good laugh, like a spit my tea out all down my tshirt and my sides hurt type laugh then I listen to My Dad Wrote a Porno. This podcast is hilarious but be warned, if you don’t like bad language then this is not for you (at all!). My Dad Wrote a Porno is hosted by three university friends, Alice Levine, James Copper and Jamie Morton. Jamie’s Dad has written an erotic novel and to try and deal with this embarrassment, Jamie reads the book aloud as his two friends critique it in the most brutal but I-can’t-breathe-it’s-too-funny kind of way. Honestly, you are probably going to look like a lunatic sunbathing on the beach and laughing your head off listening to this but, for a funny listen, I can’t think of anything better. There are three series of this for you to listen to so get ready for the LOLS and enjoy (DO NOT let the kids steal your headphones while it’s playing!).

Podcasts arent something that have ever interested me, but reading how convenient they are to listen to no matter what you’re doing sounds good for my busy schedule!

Fab suggestions here! I have never really thought of listening to podcasts as I am more into my music. Perhaps it’s about time that I checked them out. πŸ™‚

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand reading books on the beach. My eyes hurt from the glare of the sun off the pages, my arms get tired eventually and I really hate getting sand in the crevices. Of my book, of course.

I highly recommend Lore and Unexplained (two different podcasts) – true creepy history. I can’t get enough!
