Leo is now 3! How on earth has this happened? My beautiful boy is growing up so fast, the toddler years are flying by in a noisy and colourful blur of tantrums, fun and chaotic madness. I am almost too scared to blink as I fear when I open my eyes we will be stood at the school gates on Leo’s first day and the toddler days will officially be over. To celebrate Leo’s birthday we had a whopping 3 days full of fun. Saturday was party day, Sunday was treat day to Peppa Pig World (post coming soon) and Monday was Leo’s actual birthday and we played with all his new toys and ate too many biscuits and cakes. I feel as though I have learnt a lot from Leo’s extended birthday weekend, I have now seen what a true party animal really looks like. For those of you who want a simpler, cheaper and hell of a lot funnier way to party than and a night out on the tiles, you might just want to keep on reading…
How to party like a three year old.
In the week leading up to the party you must invite everyone you see to your big day. This includes, but is in no way limited to, the man who works on the checkout in your local shop, the librarian, anyone waiting next to you in a queue and every old granny who smiles at you on the street.
As your birthday party approaches you must ask ‘is it my birthday party today’ continuously on a loop until you are given the biscuit tin as bribery to stop the people around you from going insane. Questioning must promptly resume once biscuit tin is empty.
When party day arrives, demand your party to start moments after you’ve woken up. Do not be forced to wait until the official party start time. Everyone knows 8am is the best time of day for cake and balloons anyway.
Once your party finally begins, don’t bother wasting time thanking your guests for showing up. Instead, make everyone come and play with you, bossing people around is totally acceptable on your birthday.
When the food is put out, make sure you only eat the good stuff. Chocolate, cake, biscuits and crisps are perfectly acceptable, if you so much as glance at the veg sticks or the sliced fruit then you may as well just go home now.
Where us grown ups may enjoy seeing how many shots we can do in a row, for three year olds it’s all about the party rings. How many can I eat in a row before I end up being sick everywhere? Challenge accepted.
Presents should be opened in a frenzy of manic ripping and throwing of wrapping paper. An approximate time of 0.5 seconds may be spent admiring your gift before moving on to the next package.
Birthday cards are a waste of time, don’t even bother looking at those. Unless they have a badge of course.
No matter how much sugar you have consumed and no matter you much you want to, do not fall asleep! Sleeping at parties is a big no no.
Dance like no one is watching, that’s what grown up say. For a three year old? Dance and make sure everyone is watching, throw your arms around in a completely uncoordinated fashion and run around in circles until your spectators are dizzy just from watching you. If you can chuck in some high pitched shrieking too that would be perfect.
When the party is over, do not leave quietly. Demand the party continues into the small hours, who wants a bath and to go to bed when there is still more cake to be eaten and a pile of new toys desperate to be played with? Keep on grooving long after everyone has gone and, if you can, drag out the celebrations for next few days. You’re only 3 once after all.
So there you have it, how to party like a 3 year old. I hope you feel like you’ve learnt something 🙂
Here are some photos from Leo’s 3 day bender, oops I mean birthday party!
Does your little one like to party too? What is their party style? Are they a fan of the party rings too or do they try and sneak a cheeky nap half way through the celebrations? I’d love to know.

Ahh happy birthday Leo! Three year olds really know how to party! I laughed about the card bit, my kids are so disinterested in the cards, even my 12 year old unless there’s money inside!! They are cast aside un-read, even with the occasional, “Boring!” thrown in! #bestandworst

Cards are a bit pointless for kids aren’t they! They look so nice up on display though. Thanks for the happy birthday xx
Yay to dancing like EVERYONE is watching… I think three is now my new favourite age for birthday parties. NG’s was in July and I had an even better time than at my own. #BloggerClubUK

Looks like a great day! I have a theory kids parties are like adults parties but sugar instead of alcohol…starts off reserved but ends with crying, shrieking(squealing?) and someone vomiting…Ha! #KCACOLS
When I saw this post linked up to #kcacols I just had to swing by and check it out – I also have a three year old who LOVES birthdays and Thomas! My boy turned three back in March, and he still decides at least once a week that it’s his birthday again and that we should all give him presents and make him a cake. Haha!
I loved this post, very funny. They definitely DO invite everyone they see in the weeks leading up, don’t they?
It sounds like your little dude wrung every last drop of fun out of his birthday. Good on him! It’s nice to build family traditions into your celebrations as the years go by – I hope the dancing is one that you can all continue 🙂

Awww happy birthday Leo! Looks like he had a great day. Mini R is a fan of the party rings and Swiss roll type cake which he shoved in his mouth at an alarming rate during his party in June.
Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday. X
We should all learn to party like 3 year olds, it would probably be cheaper and so much more fun #KCACOLD

Everyone should party like a 3 year old! A lot of what you describe is also true of teenage party goers! I think we regress again when alcohol is introduced!! #KCACOLS
