Why won’t my toddler eat? – living with a fussy eater

Why won’t my toddler eat? – living with a fussy eater

Does anyone else miss the early days of weaning? Where you could just blend healthy food up and your baby would just eat it off a spoon? I definitely miss that.

At the time it didn’t seem that easy but I would take all the blending and mashing in the world over our current situation. Since about 9 months Leo has been self feeding and eating pretty much the same as us. It was all going well, apart from the odd few days here and there, but since he hit about 18months mealtimes are becoming a massive battle.

Why won’t my toddler eat? – living with a fussy eater

Leo is no angel but he is generally well behaved, put him in his highchair and he transforms into a little demon. Previous favourite foods like pasta, grapes andΒ  sandwiches are now ending up being tossed around the room. Where vegetables were once eaten without complaint, they are now being completely ignored or spat out.

Toys and teddies are becoming regular guests at the dinner table but their use as a distraction is very limited, normally around the third forkfull Leo starts to protest and the toy is launched off the highchair, landing on the pile of veg below.

Breakfast has always been Leo’s best mealtime but over the last couple days even this has become a struggle. It’s so stressful for me and I feel guilty that’s he’s not getting the nutrition he needs. He doesn’t completely starve himself but more food definitely ends up on the floor than in his tummy.

He’s a big fan of the brown food: chips, bread, potatoes…just like his dad! Unfortunately, he has also inherited my sweet tooth and can now say cake, chocolate and biscuit..oh dear! I have now had to become evil mum and stop giving him any treats, I can’t have him avoiding all healthy food but eating chocolate can I?!

I feel like I am doing all I can, I am offering him healthy snacks and making them look really fun and yet I am confronted with a child refusing to eat it and shouting ‘no’ as he flings it all on the floor.

In desperate need of some help and reassurance that this is just a phase! Anyone else had to deal with a naughty and fussy eater? Please let me know how you got through it.

Hmm..I wonder how blended veg would go down for lunch?!!

You know what? I hate being in my highchair…all strapped in against my will. My mummy got me a little table and chair set from IKEA. Now I sit like a little adult and eat at my own pace. I turn into a demon in my highchair after 5 mins x #TwinklyTuesday

Hi Wendy! I can TOTALLY relate to this. Our 2.5yr old has got worse and worse at eating (sorry – wish I could report that is was just a short phase!). I have to pretty much bribe him senseless to eat EVERY meal and he is soooo slow and easily distracted. I get very envious of parents who can use meal times themselves as bribes! Hope we'll both come out the other side soon πŸ™‚

That is an excellent idea..your mummy is very clever! I might give that a go and atleast if it doesn't work he will have a little table to do drawing and stuff on. Thank you!x

It is so hard when they do this. I find there is nothing more frustrating than spending time cooking a lovely healthy meal for them just not to eat it. Zach is a pretty good eater but trying to get meat down him is hard. He spits it out most of the time. We have no problem with him eating fruit and vegetables though so I try not to worry too much. He also hates pasta…you know, that one thing that can make so many different variations of food…he hates it! It is just a phase though…there is no knowing how long it will go on for but it is a phase. Do you give him multivitamins? If not it may be worth starting so you know that he is at least getting what his body needs on a daily basis. Thanks so much for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
