20 week pregnancy update

20 week pregnancy update

Can you believe that I am now half way through my pregnancy? I sure can’t! Since I last wrote a pregnancy update, when I was 16weeks, my bump has probably tripled in size and I definitely feel pregnant now.

So apart from having a bump that is growing bigger by the day. here is what has been going on with me and baby bump lately.

How have I been feeling? – Pregnancy hormones have been getting to me A LOT over the past month or so. I have days where I just feel like crying for no reason and there are times where the smallest thing can cause me to be in foul mood for the rest of the day. Most days I seem to be able to keep my crazy hormones under control though, much to the joy of Oli and Leo. I am starting to get more and more excited about meeting baby number 2, I find myself daydreaming about life with 2 children all the time. Despite the hormones trying to bring me down, I am feeling pretty good.

Any symptoms? – I have still been feeling dizzy but not as bad as I was. The horrible nauseous feeling I thought I had managed to escape reappeared at 18weeks and I felt really rough for at least a week- noo! Most days I feel fine though so I can’t complain too much, pregnancy is never easy for the whole 9months is it? As bump is growing I am starting to get the odd twinge and stabbing pain in my belly, I remember this from my last pregnancy and it is just all the muscles stretching to make room baby.

Baby bump Naptime Natter

I am most definitely blooming, well my belly is anyway – bloomin’ huge!

Have I done any shopping/preparation? – Umm, no! I haven’t bought a single thing, not even one measly pack of newborn nappies or baby oil. There is still a lot of time to get things sorted before October so I am not rushing off to Mama’s and Papa’s or Mother Care just yet. My mother in law bought me a pair of maternity jeans last weekend but that is a far as the pregnancy/baby orientated shopping goes.

What food am I loving/hating/craving? – Things seemed to have settled down a lot when it comes to food. I no longer feel the need to eat all day every day and I am able to wait for breakfast if I need to now, the days of stuffing toast in my face seconds after I open my eyes so I don’t feel sick are gone, yay! My pregnancy super sense of smell has kicked in so if Oli is cooking something that smells quite strong I have to leave the kitchen.

Have I had any appointments? – On Friday Oli and I went to the hospital for my 20week scan. It was amazing! The sonographer performing the scan was so lovely and she talked us through everything. We saw all of baby’s organs, limbs and all the important parts, we even got to watch baby’s heart beating away for a good couple of minutes while the sonographer took her measurements, amazing! Oli wanted to find out the gender and after weeks of asking he finally wore me down, I was determined not to find out but I decided to be a nice wife and give him his way. I won’t tell you if we are having a baby boy or girl just yet, I will leave you all guessing for just a little while longer. Baby appears to be completely healthy but the sonographer did have a bit of worrying news. My placenta is low lying at the minute, it may move out of the way as the pregnancy progresses but, if not, the only way for baby to be born will be for me to have a c section. This is not what I want, at all. I had an amazing labour with Leo, I managed it all with just gas and air and the birthing pool and I would love to be able to do this again. I have another scan at 32 weeks to see if the placenta has moved but if it is still blocking baby’s way out then it will be a planned c section for me – keep your fingers crossed for me that it moves, the thought of surgery terrifies me. During the scan baby was lying facing out so the sonographer was not able to get a good photo for us of his/her profile but she did manage to snap an amazing picture of baby’s little face, we even got a cheeky wave off our little baba.

Baby scan

A glimpse at baby’s face – look at that button nose!

20 week scan

In case you couldn’t work out the last picture, it took me a good hour before I could figure out what I was looking at!

Have I felt baby move? – Yes! I felt those first little popping/fluttery movements at around 17 weeks and slowly but surely the movements have started to feel more like kicks. Baby’s movements seem to have fallen into a bit of a pattern already, I can feel lots of kicks first thing in the morning and then nothing throughout the day until I am lying on the sofa with Oli in the evenings. Baby is pretty strong already and Oli has felt a couple of kicks, this is something that didn’t happen until about my 25th week of pregnancy with Leo.

What is happening with bump? – At 20 weeks baby is about the same length as a banana and weighs about 10 ounces. Baby is swallowing lots of amniotic fluid now and is busy creating his/her first ever poo ready Β for me to deal with as soon as he/she arrives. Mums, do you remember that first baby poo? So gross. Baby is now covered in weird thick white stuff to stop him/her shrivelling up like a prune in their watery home and baby’s main job now is just to grow grow grow!

That’s it for this pregnancy update, I will see you all again for next one in a few weeks.

Are you pregnant too, how’s your pregnancy going? Has anyone else had a low lying placenta and managed to have a natural delivery? I would love to know your experiences.

You really look like you’re glowing Wendy. I remember how tough it was at times in my second pregnancy when you’re exhausted and still running around after a little one. We only said earlier today though as our two were playing together in the paddling pool, that it was so worth every second!
Looking forward to your next post lovely. Thanks for linking with #FartGlitter x

Thank you Dawn :). Yes this pregnancy is much more difficult thst the first, mainly because of all the running around after a toddler like you said. I am sure it is going to be worth it all in the end though, I can’t wait for Leo to be a big brother and to have a newborn in my arms again, exciting times ahead!xx p.s I’m jealous that you have a paddling pool πŸ™‚

Ohh I’m so glad to hear someone else has had this and it all worked out ok. Oh bless her, I guess the idea of not having to go through labour is appealing but I can’t cope with the thought of surgery after having a really positive natural birth last time. Thanks for giving me hope that it’s probably going to move!xx

Wendy you look fantastic and I’m glad things are going well! I really hope that the placenta moves for you so that you can have a natural birth. To be honest c-sections are not as scary as you think, I’ve had two both an emergency c-section and a planned one. The latter was much more relaxed and easy going than the first. Xx #KCACOLS
