I love a good night out and by night out I mean an evening out of the house with friends than involves lots of chatting, dancing and, of course, a gin or six. Being 22 weeks pregnant and already a mum to a two year old, my nights out are extremely rare, and the nights like the one I describe above are now just a happy yet some what blurry memory.
Pregnancy hasn’t stopped me getting out on the odd occasion though, just because I can’t drink doesn’t mean I can’t have fun, right? The times I have ventured to the pub or, dare I say it, a club while I have been pregnant, I have noticed there are many things that happen on a night on when you’re knocked up. Little things that don’t happen when there isn’t a tiny human growing in your belly, guilt tripping you into not touching a single drop of alcohol.
So here are my observations, pregnant ladies and Mums out there..can you relate?
5 things you notice on a night out when you’re pregnant..
Everyone loves the bump – Seriously, drunk people just love to talk about your growing belly. With alcohol breaking the brain to mouth filter, intoxicated friends will happily ask you questions about your pregnancy body that they wouldn’t dare ask if sober. Also, be prepared for lots of strangers attempting to put their non pint holding hands on your belly, drunk people love your baby bump as much as you do, apparently.
There is only so much orange juice you can drink – Or coke, or water or whatever soft drink you force yourself to drink while in the pub so you don’t feel completely left out. Mocktails are good but can only fool you for so long. It may look pretty but the only thing that virgin mojito is going to do is make you need a wee. Which leads me nicely on to point 3..
You become more interested in where the toilet is than where the dance floor is at – Remember the days when you would run to the bar, grab a drink and head straight for the dance floor with your girls? Now you’re pregnant before you can even consider manoeuvring your massive body around in to something that resembles a ‘dance move’ you first need to locate the loos – and use them of course. Any where you choose to sit, stand or dance needs to be close to the ladies, once a place for giggling and making drunk friends is now a place for queue jumping and the saviour of many baby jumping on bladder close calls.
Everyone loves the designated driver – Seriously, drunk people love to get a free lift. Whether you are taking your friends 5 minutes down the road or driving everyone home from a big night out on the town, being the designated driver gets big respect from your drunken companions. However, when you’re pregnant you automatically become the designated driver. I’m not saying I mind playing taxi driver as it makes sense after all, it would just be nice for people to ask and not assume sometimes, that’s all..
For once, you really do have nothing to wear – ‘I have nothing to wear!’ – a phrase I am sure we have all said while rummaging through drawers full of clothes and sifting through hundreds of coats hangers for the perfect dress in the wardrobe? Well for the first time ever, it’s actually true. All your pre pregnancy clothes are too tight (and not in the good way) and maternity dresses are just never what you want them to be are they? It is likely after hours of making yourself depressed staring at clothes that no longer fit you, you will opt for the more casual look and just dress it up with accessories and a fancy hair do. As for high heals? Only odd people who enjoy a bit of pain would wear those on a night out while also sporting a hefty baby bump.
It’s not all doom and gloom though my pregnant friends, a night out when you’re pregnant can still be fun.
Yes there may be none of this…
And a lot if this..
But at least you’re not at home feeling like this..
Or spending you night doing this…
Surely, an alcohol free night out is better than wasting another evening like this…?
Also no hangover, that’s got to be a big bonus to partying with a baby bump.
What do you think ladies? Have you gone on a night out when pregnant? Did you enjoy it? Is there anything you would add to this list? I would love to know.
