5 things you notice on a night out when you’re pregnant

5 things you notice on a night out when you’re pregnant

I love a good night out and by night out I mean an evening out of the house with friends than involves lots of chatting, dancing and, of course, a gin or six. Being 22 weeks pregnant and already a mum to a two year old, my nights out are extremely rare, and the nights like the one I describe above are now just a happy yet some what blurry memory.

Pregnancy hasn’t stopped me getting out on the odd occasion though, just because I can’t drink doesn’t mean I can’t have fun, right? The times I have ventured to the pub or, dare I say it, a club while I have been pregnant, I have noticed there are many things that happen on a night on when you’re knocked up. Little things that don’t happen when there isn’t a tiny human growing in your belly, guilt tripping you into not touching a single drop of alcohol.

So here are my observations, pregnant ladies and Mums out there..can you relate?

5 things you notice on a night out when you’re pregnant..

Everyone loves the bump – Seriously, drunk people just love to talk about your growing belly. With alcohol breaking the brain to mouth filter, intoxicated friends will happily ask you questions about your pregnancy body that they wouldn’t dare ask if sober. Also, be prepared for lots of strangers attempting to put their non pint holding hands on your belly, drunk people love your baby bump as much as you do, apparently.

What you want to say when someone offers to buy you a drink…                                 Image source//Metro

There is only so much orange juice you can drink – Or coke, or water or whatever soft drink you force yourself to drink while in the pub so you don’t feel completely left out. Mocktails are good but can only fool you for so long. It may look pretty but the only thing that virgin mojito is going to do is make you need a wee. Which leads me nicely on to point 3..

It looks good, tastes good but IT’S NOT THE SAME!!

You become more interested in where the toilet is than where the dance floor is at – Remember the days when you would run to the bar, grab a drink and head straight for the dance floor with your girls? Now you’re pregnant before you can even consider manoeuvring your massive body around in to something that resembles a ‘dance move’ you first need to locate the loos – and use them of course. Any where you choose to sit, stand or dance needs to be close to the ladies, once a place for giggling and making drunk friends is now a place for queue jumping and the saviour of many baby jumping on bladder close calls.

Everyone loves the designated driver – Seriously, drunk people love to get a free lift. Whether you are taking your friends 5 minutes down the road or driving everyone home from a big night out on the town, being the designated driver gets big respect from your drunken companions. However, when you’re pregnant you automatically become the designated driver. I’m not saying I mind playing taxi driver as it makes sense after all, it would just be nice for people to ask and not assume sometimes, that’s all..

Definitely what my husband thinks.                                                         Image source//Meme Generator

For once, you really do have nothing to wear – ‘I have nothing to wear!’ – a phrase I am sure we have all said while rummaging through drawers full of clothes and sifting through hundreds of coats hangers for the perfect dress in the wardrobe? Well for the first time ever, it’s actually true. All your pre pregnancy clothes are too tight (and not in the good way) and maternity dresses are just never what you want them to be are they?  It is likely after hours of making yourself depressed staring at clothes that no longer fit you, you will opt for the more casual look and just dress it up with accessories and a fancy hair do. As for high heals? Only odd people who enjoy a bit of pain would wear those on a night out while also sporting a hefty baby bump.

It’s not all doom and gloom though my pregnant friends, a night out when you’re pregnant can still be fun.

Yes there may be none of this…

Surely, an alcohol free night out is better than wasting another evening like this…?

Also no hangover, that’s got to be a big bonus to partying with a baby bump.

What do you think ladies? Have you gone on a night out when pregnant? Did you enjoy it? Is there anything you would add to this list? I would love to know.

Haha, thanks. I know, orange juice gets soo sickly after a while doesn’t it!xx

I didn’t go out much when I was pregnant, especially the second time. I just didn’t enjoy it, my back ached from sitting down in hard seats and I definitely got fed up with orange juice x #picknmix

Yea, it is not the most fun. I have only gone a few times this pregnancy, I went out quite a bit during my first and even spent my wedding day completely sober. Orange juice is so boring after a couple of glasses xx

Haha great post. I hated being pregnant, I’ve always been one for just getting on with things so I was still playing water polo until I was 4 months pregnant (couldn’t fit into my costume after that) and still running and playing tennis and squash at 9 1/2 months pregnant both times. But going out? Hated it. Still did it though obvs 😉

You were playing tennis at 9 and a half months pregnant?!Oh my god, you are amazing! I can barely do an hours swim in the pool now and 22wweks without nearly passing out haha. Ahh I know, going out preggers isn’t the best but sometimes it has to be done if you want to see people/be sociable xx

Fab post and so true! Im also pregnant with our second babt and can completely relate, although I havent been so lucky to actually get on many nights out the second time round. Being pregnant and nights out definitely have their pros and cons! 😉 Emily #TheList

Haha, yea they do..probably more cons than pros but sometimes you just need to get out don’t you? I have only been to the pub a couple times this pregnancy but that is more to do with not having a babysitter for my boy rather than not wanting to go out xx

I sympathise a lot and also commend you on having the patience for a night out – mine were rare 🙂 so true about people loving a bump though which is quite nice 🙂 x #thelist

It is nice when people ask about bump but it can be a bit irritating when people you’ve never met try to touch it. I’ve not been on many this time around as we have no one to look after Leo xx

  5. June 18, 2016 / 9:07 am

Oh man the worst thing is definitely the gallons of juice, you can only fit so much in! That’s what used to end my nights out as I would get bored of it and feel like a weeble!

  6. June 18, 2016 / 10:08 am

Touching the bump is one thing but even sober hands can get the height wrong!

Being sober on a night out can be no fun. My friend used to be our record keeper for all the shenanigans, judging and shaming.

  7. June 18, 2016 / 12:10 pm

Absolutely spot on, great choice of pis to illustrate it all. I am so happy it’s all over and can get some booze now, even if we don’t out much with a baby #fortheloveofBLOG

Thank you :). Lucky you, I can’t wait to have a gin once baby is here. Although I plan on breastfeeding so could still be quite a while before I get my next proper boozey night out. Next time you’re down the pub have a drink for me 🙂 xx

lol- I didn’t go out much when I was pregnant. Im rather anti social at the best of times, so forcing myself to drink coke all night while my friends were drinking was not my idea of fun haha! But, Im an all or nothing kinda gal so it made sense for me to stay in and be pregnant and boring 😉 #fortheloveofBLOG

  9. June 18, 2016 / 5:33 pm

God I remember whenever I went out when I was pregnant the first time just getting extrmemely annoyed with anyone who is drunk – especially and most of all my husband ! And yes to the fact that there’s only so much orange juice you can drink without losing the will ! #fortheloveofblog

I love this, it is SO true! I was out last night for the first time in ages, immediately spotted the loos and had one sprite and one mocktail! Paaaarty animal! Got home at midnight and have spent the day knackered after the 3 year old woke up at 5.15. #TheList

I’m not sure I made it as far as a club when pregnant so kudos to you! But I do have fond (?!?) memories of being designated driver from the pub. And eeeeeveryone touching your bump or worse, telling you *those* birth stories…

I agree with the only too many soft drinks & locating the loo. I never managed a club pregnant but did a few pubs. It is a tad boring but no hangovers are bliss. #kcacols lifeinthemumslane

Yes, big yay to no hangovers! I only did a club once in my last pregnancy, it was for my hen night. It was in Camden and was so busy, won’t be doing that again this time around. Haha locating the loos early on in the night is a must xx

  14. June 19, 2016 / 8:11 pm

Ha, this is true. I hated going out when I was preggers as everyone around me was drunk and pleased that I was driving. I remember one night out when husband slurred to me ‘I love you’ and equally squiffy best friend went ‘ahhhhhh’ and I was thinking no, not ahhh, just bloody p*&&ed and annoying! Still, is only for nine months 😉 x #KCACOLS

Planning an outfit is way hard, because your bump can change shape and grow on the bloody day you’re going out rendering your initial outfit choice suddenly too frumpy / tight / revealing. Oh and people talk to you when they’re super drunk and it’s funny for 5 mins then proper dull! Brings back memories, great list #fartglitter

I haven’t been about much while pregnant but thanks to the times I have been out I can totally relate! Especially the soft drinks – everything is so sugary when it’s non-alcoholic I can’t get through more than three drinks without wanting to throw up (similar to when I am drink alcoholic drinks!) I’m still in the ‘could be just fat’ stage so I constantly have to explain to people that I’m not drinking because I’m pregnant, I’ve never understood why people care so much!! #FartGlitter

Ugh I know, I can only handle about 3 orange juices before I just give up on drinking fir the night ha. I’m quite lucky that my belly is an obvious baby bump, it must be so annoying having to explain to everyone why you’re not drinking xx

  20. June 20, 2016 / 7:44 pm

Now in spite of what my blog name might insinuate, I barely drink at all, and have often considered giving it up totally. The only thing I find on a sober night out is that I CANNOT DANCE. I just end up wiggling around feeling awkward. At least when I was pregnant and sober I could just sway my bump about a bit and carry it off quite nicely. Hats off to you for managing to club with a bump lovely. I struggle to manage that now even without one!

Thanks for linking up with #fartglitter xx

Haha too funny! After just enduring the past year of pregnancy and breastfeeding, I can sooo relate to this. Also everyone else starts to think everything is really funny and you are left wondering what is wrong with your sense of humour until you realise they are all pissed and you’re still sober and boring. I must say I am glad to get back to my wine these days 🙂 Still, the no-hangover thing was a bonus! x

Haha thanks. I have not been out much this pregnancy, only the pub a few times. In my first I did quite a bit, even spent my wedding day sober surrounded by drunk people. It can get exhausting being the only sober one though xx

  27. June 30, 2016 / 2:07 pm

I can’t think that I really went on nights out when I was pregnant, but I did go to a wedding when I was literally about 5 days pregnant and that was really hard because I thought I might be pregnant but wasn’t sure, so didn’t drink just in case, which obviously just aroused suspicion! I do find it hard being sober around drunk people though, it’s just exhausting after a while! x #KCACOLS
