The daily struggles of the heavily pregnant

Being pregnant has it’s many ups and downs, there are lots of little perks to growing a human but the journey is rarely a completely smooth one. The first 12 weeks are horrible for most mums, full of morning sickness and exhaustion but then the second trimester brings with it a boost in energy, exciting baby kicks and a blooming baby bump. By the time you arrive in the third trimester, your energy begins to slip away again and as your body is stretched beyond all recognition, it can be hard to hold on to that ‘pregnancy glow’. I am now 39 weeks and 5days pregnant, my pregnancy journey is almost over and I am so relieved. Obviously, I can’t wait to meet my baby boy and to get stuck into life as a family of four but I am also eager to say goodbye to all the daily struggles I am facing now I am the size of a whale. For any pregnant mummas out there blissfully enjoying the earlier stages of pregnancy, I thought I would give you a little insight in to what is to come, all the little struggles you will face when you are heavily pregnant and can barely remember what is was like to be able to see your feet (if you are a believer in ignorance is bliss, maybe you should go read one of my other pregnancy posts!).

The daily struggles of the heavily pregnant.

1. All you want to do is sleep but when bed time rolls around it takes you ages to perfectly organise your tower of pillows and get comfortable. If you are lucky you may get a few hours of shut eye before you have to get up for the first of many late night trips to the toilet.

2. Getting out of bed in the morning is not dissimilar to a turtle being stuck of it’s back. It can take a good ten minutes to roll out of bed without injuring yourself or ending up a giant mess on the floor.

3. Shaving your legs, whether in the bath or the shower, becomes a scary and extremely challenging tasks. To reach every part of your prickly pins would require the flexibility of a professional gymnast. I would suggest going for a wax or just giving in to defeat and embracing your inner yeti, you are less likely to pull a muscle that way.

4. When you have a bath you never completely have a bath. Yes you may fill the tub as much as possible but I can guarantee by the last few weeks of pregnancy, no matter how you sit in the water, your baby bump will always be popping up out of the bubbles to say hello.

5. Getting dressed for the day brings with it lots of it’s own problems. Your maternity clothes may now be too small and your beach ball midriff will be trying to escape through every top you put on. Many hours of your week can be spent trying to put on socks and shoes. Also, with a body that seems to have a seriously broken thermostat it can be impossible to know, even though it’s cold outside, whether you should put on that knitted jumper or not. Hot flushes in late pregnancy can strike at anytime and they are not fun.

6. Whenever you do venture out the house, your trips now need to be carefully planned around toilet stops. Only women with pelvic floors made of steel would brave a day trip somewhere without a toilet. Walks on the beach and in the woods have been a no go for me the past month or two, I no way still have the balance to have an emergency wee behind a tree!

7. Housework sucks at the best of times but it is extra crap when you are lugging around a humongous belly. The nesting instinct means you will want to spend your days cleaning and, unfortunately, there is no longer such thing as a ‘quick run around’ with the hoover. I have spent hours dusting, bleaching, sweeping, mopping and organising when really all I want to do is put my feet up and have a much needed rest. Damn you nesting urges, the house is clean please don’t make me hoover the ceiling again.

8. When washing the dishes you are now about a mile away from the sink. I can’t remember the last time I was able to wash a plate without getting murky dishwater all over the only top that still fits me – ahh! I bet loading a dishwasher is no easier. All that bending down to fill it up? No thank you.

9. You want to keep active and walk around lots in an attempt to get baby to drop and their head to engage now you are near the end of your pregnancy. The problem is, walking around is hard work and can be quite painful when it feels like you have the weight of the world pushing down between your legs. I have got such a waddle on now it’s actually quite funny, I am so looking forward to walking like a human again and not a gangster penguin.

10. The most messed up thing? You spend days/weeks just waiting to feel in pain. As your due date gets closer you can’t help but eagerly look out for some signs you are going into labour, although you know it’s going to hurt you want to feel those first painful cramps, a squeezing pain in your back or for those Braxton Hicks to turn into the real thing. Every night I go to bed hoping I get woken up in the night because contractions have started and yet every morning I wake up disappointed that nothing has happened.

So there you go, an honest look into the final weeks of pregnancy. It is not the funnest of times but amongst all the tough bits, there are lots of baby acrobatics for you to enjoy, an excuse to be spoilt by your partner and the growing excitement that the wait is almost over and your baby will be in your arms soon.

How did you find the final month of your pregnancy? Did you have an easy third trimester or did you find it quite difficult, like I am? Did you struggle with anything that isn’t on this list when you were heavily pregnant? If you are pregnant now, I hope you are enjoying your pregnancy journey and if you are looking for some reading material I have lots of bump related posts over in the pregnancy section of my blog.

Yes, your list just about covers it;). I remember from my pregnancy, the best months were between 5th and 7th month. First two months I struggled with morning sickness (all day sickness for me) and the last two months – well you’ve described it;). At the end I couldn’t wait for pregnancy to be over..

Second time around the whole waiting for pain thing was awful! There are only 10.5 months between my two so I didn’t have time to forget!

I’m 37+5 now and I hear you on most of these points! I think I’ve been really lucky in pregnancy and even in my third trimester have felt pretty well, better since finishing work at 36 weeks and I don’t have the waddle or urge to clean yet so am pretty sure I won’t be seeing baby just yet! A point I’d add is eating food on the couch – I know, I could sit properly at the table, but when you want to eat tea while watching Strictly It Takes Two on the TV, it’s impossible to have your tea on your lap and lean forward even slightly to meet your fork. I drop food on my belly every night without fail. Good luck – hopefully not much longer for you! #ablogginggoodtime x

Loved this and found myself nodding away! Those last few weeks of pregnancy are so hard and at the time I always found myself wondering why I put myself through it, but it’s definitely worth every moment! Hopefully there isn’t much longer for you now! X #ablogginggoodtime
