Easy Batman biscuits to bake with kids

Easy Batman biscuits to bake with kids

My boy Leo is obsessed with Batman. OB-SESSED! Whenever he plays little imaginary games I can always hear him chatting away about Batman and The Joker. He asks me to make up stories about Batman fighting all the bad guys and he loves playing with his Batman and other superhero Duplo figures. So, it is not hard to imagine how excited Leo was to go and watch The Lego Batman Movie earlier this year – he loved every second of that film and is already asking when we can buy it on disk (DVD to us grown ups). After our cinema trip to watch Lego Batman I decided to treat Leo to some homemade biscuits, another one of his favourite things, and together we baked these ridiculously easy batman biscuits. If you have a little Batman fan in your life too, I can guarantee these biscuits will go down a treat.

Before you start making these you are going to need a batman cookie cutter – we got ours from Amazon for less than £2. The cookie cutter is just a bat shape so if you have a bat cutter from Halloween or something then that would work perfectly. I love this recipe as there are so many parts of it where you can get your little ones involved, Leo loved helping me measure the ingredients, crack the eggs and, of course, his favourite part was cutting the biscuits out with the coolest cutter ever.

Best biscuit cutter…ever!

These biscuits really are SO easy so if you are only just starting to try your hand at baking then this is the recipe for you. I slightly adapted this vanilla almond cookie recipe to make our batman biscuits and Leo loved being my little kitchen assistant. The biscuit dough that this recipe makes is now my favourite dough ever, it was so easy to shape into a ball and roll out and it wasn’t crumbly at all.

Leo’s favourite bit

Along with being bat shape, Leo and I decided that these biscuits needed something a little bit extra to make them into the most awesome Batman biscuits ever. We decided to decorate the biscuits with Batman inspired coloured icing: black and yellow biscuits for Batman and purple and green ones for The Joker. If I am honest I was not 100% happy with the icing (I just mixed icing sugar, water and food colouring) it was a bit lumpy in places and the black came out more of a dull grey. Actually, I would have liked the colours on all of them to be a bit more vibrant, I would recommend buying food colouring in gel form rather than the liquid ones as the gel colours usually come out brighter. Leo was really happy with his biscuits though and he loved icing them; I filled up four bowls with the different coloured icing and let him dip the biscuits in each.

Dipping biscuits in icing is a really easy way for the kids to get involved with decorating your bakes

Leo and I had a lot of fun making these biscuits together, yes it was messy and they didn’t end up looking perfect but it was a lovely way to spend some quality time together and we got lots of yummy treats at the end of it all. I am not sure exactly how many Batman biscuits this recipe makes as we started eating them before I could count them, it was definitely over 20! If you do decide to make these, let me know how you got on – happy baking!

Batman biscuits recipe.

Ingredients:

For the biscuits:

  • 360g of plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 200g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (large)
  • 225g unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

For the glace icing:

  • Icing sugar
  • Water
  • Food colouring – black, yellow, green and purple (ideally gel)

Equipment:

  • Batman cookie cutter
  • Baking parchment
  • Flat baking trays
  • Rolling pin
  • Mixer with ‘K’ attachment or wooden spoon if mixing by hand

Method:

  • Preheat oven to 175c/gas mark 4 and prepare your baking trays with baking parchment.
  • Add ‘K’ attachment to your mixer and mix the butter and sugar together until fully combined.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, make sure to add the egg slowly so it doesn’t curdle.
  • In a separate bowl sift the flour and baking powder together and then slowly add to your mixer until all ingredients have combined to form a dough.
  • Turn the mixture out onto a floured surface and shape into a ball. On your floured surface roll the dough out to your required thickness, I usually use the £1 coin rule.
  • Cut out your Batman biscuits using your cookie cutter and place on your prepared baking trays, leave space between each biscuit as they may loose their shape slightly if they get stuck together while baking.
  • Bake in your preheated oven for approximately 10minutes, or until they are just starting to go a nice golden colour.
  • Once baked transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  • I totally winged it with the icing. I just gradually added water to a few spoonful’s of icing sugar and added a few drops of food colouring until it made icing of an almost spreadable consistency – if it is too runny just add more sugar and if it is too stiff just add more water. Like I said, I wasn’t completely happy with my icing but here is a great guide on creating the perfect glace icing.
  • Dip your biscuits top down into the icing, making sure to cover the whole of the top of your biscuit. Do this with each biscuit until you have a good selection of black, yellow, purple and green biscuits.
  • Leave the iced biscuits to dry before either eating or storing in an air tight container for later.

These look so yummy! I love baking with my girls. I think it’s a great idea to dip the biscuit into the icing – much more child-friendly. I’ve always just spooned the icing onto the biscuit before. I’ll definitely remember this tip in future! #blogcrush
