The Bear Cub Bakers – children’s book review

If you read my blog regularly you will know that I am a Boolino Friend blogger. This means I get sent wonderful new children’s books to review and it is one of my favourite things to come from my blog as Leo loves books and he always get’s excited when a new one arrives in the post. Recently we were sent a copy of The Bear Cub Bakers by Caroline Baxter, here’s what we thought..

The Bear Cub Bakers – children’s book review

Title: The Bear Cub Bakers
Author: Caroline Baxter
Illustrator: Kathi Ember
Publication date:  May 2016

There are two things that Leo and I really love doing together, things we have done ever since he was a baby and have gradually become our thing. Those things are reading and baking; The Bear Cub Bakers , as you can probably imagine, has been a massive hit in our house.  The Bear Cub Bakers is a story about a little cooking school in the woods run by Miss Betsy’s Bear. The story follows a week where six little bear cubs were invited to Miss Betsy Bear’s school to learn how to bake, the best baker will win an award at the end of the week.

The Great British Bake Off has served as major inspiration for this book and we are big Bake Off fans so the similarities didn’t go unnoticed. Baxter has written this story in easy to follow rhyme and there is just enough repetition to make the book fun for the kids and not too irritating for the parents reading it. Leo loved listening to me read this story and found it funny when the little wannabe baker cubs made some silly mistakes. The story kept Leo engaged as he became invested in the baker cubs journey and wanted to find out who won the Best Baker Award at the end.

The illustrations drawn by Kathi Ember fit perfectly with the fun and light hearted tone of the story and the little bear cubs are so adorable. I challenge you to read this book and not want to eat cakes afterwards, Ember’s drawings of cakes and yummy treats look almost good enough to eat. In fact, if The Bear Cub Bakers does get you all inspired to run off to the kitchen and do some baking with the kids, there is a cupcake recipe waiting for you in the back of the book.  What is better than cuddling up with a lovely story and eating freshly baked cupcakes made by you and your little one? Not much is your answer.

If you like baking, rhyming, cuddly bears and lovely stories then you are definitely going to enjoy The Bear Cub Bakers.

The Bear Cub Bakers is available to buy from Boolino here.

Have you read this book before, what did you think? Thoughts on baking with kids, are you team yay or team no way? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Disclaimer: I am a Boolino Friend and I receive children’s books free of charge in return for an honest review. All words and opinions are always my own.
