The Great Dragon Bake Off – children’s book review

The Great Dragon Bake Off

I have said it time and time again on this blog, Leo loves reading. My boy is a complete book worm and when he’s not causing chaos (which, admittedly, he is most of the time), Leo loves being read a story or looking through his books himself. When I was given the opportunity to become a Boolino Friend and review children’s books regularly on my blog, I was so excited! Leo and I just love curling up on the sofa and reading and when The Great Dragon Bake Off by Nicola O’Byrne came flying through the letter box, we couldn’t wait to get cosy and have a read. Here is what we thought…

The Great Dragon Bake Off – Children’s book review

The Great Dragon Bake Off is a wonderfully funny children’s book written and illustrated by Nicola O’Byrne. The story combines one of Leo’s favourite things, Dragons, and also one of mine, baking, so it makes for perfect mum and son reading. This book shares the tale of Flamie Oliver, a bright red dragon who is far more interested in baking cakes and creating beautiful pastries than breathing fire, eating princesses and causing general mayhem. Despite his love of baking, Flamie is given a place at the Ferocious Dragon’s Academy and this is where he realises he is not like other dragons at all.

As Flamie’s story goes on, accompanied by fantastic, eye catching colourful illustrations, we discover that although he may not be like the others, this is not a bad thing. By not giving up on his true passion and following his heart, all of Flamie’s cake filled dreams might just come true.

Leo loves this book mostly for the dragons but, being three and a sugar fiend, he also enjoys all the pictures of cakes and his favourite part is reading about Flamie and Princess Rosewater’s culinary creations. Some children’s books can be boring for parents to read but I will happily read this more than once to Leo, we both love it. The references to The Great British Bake Off go down a treat for fans like me and mentions of soggy bottoms, Scaly Berry and Paul Firewood made me smile.

The Great Dragon Bake Offย has already become a firm story time favourite in our house and is a perfect read for cake and dragon fans alike. With the Bake Off now back on our screens, I couldn’t think of a better book to cuddle up with and escape to a world full of dragons and beautiful bakes.

Have you read The Great Dragon Bake Off, what did you think of it? If not, does it sound like something you and your children would enjoy reading? Leo and I thoroughly enjoy reading this book and we always end up wanting to munch some cake when we are done!

Ah a book that’s fun for adults and kids! Now that’s a book worth having. Mine are still a little young at the moment and we’re stuck on Dear Zoo over and over but our time will come and I’ll be on the lookout for something like this. Thanks for linking up at #fortheloveofBlog

This sounds great. I love dragons and I think most kids would too. I think it’s also a great message to kids to be themselves and not worry about being the same as everyone else
