Wishker – children’s book review

Recently I received a few lovely children’s books in the post as I am a Boolino blogger. I love getting children’s books to review as, I am sure you know by now, my Leo absolutely loves books and I always enjoy finding some new stories to share with him. I will be sharing my reviews of these three exciting books over the next few weeks, first up is my review of Wishker, a fun story all about a magic cat.

Wishker – Children’s book review

Book title: Wishker
Author: Heather Pindar
Illustrator: Sarah Jennings
Publication date: October 2016

“My name is Wishker. I’m just a rufty-tufty roaming cat, but I can do magic..”

Wishker is a story about Mirabel, a young girl who feels like she never gets her own way. Mirabel is fed up of her parents and all her family always saying no to her, she is miserable but then she meets Wishker. This cat is like no other, Wishker is a magical cat and he grants Mirable 3 wishes, she can finally get what she wants. This is a tale of being careful what you wish for, Mirabel soon learns that getting your own way all the time isn’t always a good idea.

Pindar delivers the story of Wishker and Mirabel through easy to understand text, although it doesn’t rhyme the story kept Leo interested and engaged and he had no problems following the plot. The illustrations from Sarah Jennings are bright and fun and compliment the story perfectly. Leo really enjoys looking at the pictures of the chaos Mirable causes in her home after she phones up the zoo and the circus.

I really like this story, it delivers an important message but does so in a light hearted and funny way. Leo is 3 and he finds it difficult a lot of the time if we say no to his demands so this book is helping him to realise that sometimes Mummy and Daddy have to say no for a reason, we are not just being mean.

This book gives you plenty to talk about with your little one once it has finished, you could ask them to name all the animals Mirable wishes for, you could count how many clowns and acrobats come to Mirable’s house and you could ask them what they would wish for if they met Wishker the cat.

Leo and I both really enjoy reading Wishker, it is a fun story that sparks your imagination that is great to read any time of the day but we enjoy reading it for story time before bed.

Do you enjoy reading books with your children? Have you read Wishker yet? If not, would you consider adding it to your book collection now? I would love to know your thoughts.

Wishker is available to buy from Boolino.
