My Big Tree – children’s book review

Regular readers of my blog will know that my boy Leo is a very active toddler. He is always on the go, running all over the place and it wouldn’t be unfair to describe him as a bit of a handful. Although Leo loves to be outside exploring and using up his heaps of energy, one of his favourite past times is to snuggle up with me and read some story books. I was delighted when children’s author Maria Ashworth got in touch asking if Leo and I would like to have a read of her new story, My Big Tree.

My Big Tree by Maria Ashworth – A book review.

My Big Tree is the story of one little Bluebird and one very big tree. Bluebird loves the big tree but it does not take long for other animals and creatures in the wood to realise that they like the same big tree quite a lot too. As you can guess, Bluebird doesn’t want to share the tree with all these animals and he flies off to find somewhere new. I won’t tell you how the story ends but My Big Tree really is a lovely story about sharing and friendship and it’s words are complemented perfectly by adorable illustrations.

Leo loved My Big Tree , he loved to look at the wonderful pictures of birds, frogs, snakes and all the other creatures and he enjoyed helping me count them all up on each page. As well as having an important message about sharing, Maria’s book also helps children to learn how to count to 10, recognise colours and discover different animal sounds. Leo really enjoyed my impression of a bat ‘eeking’ and his bear growls were very convincing!

Maria has managed to create a story that helps children learn to count and recognise sounds, colours and animals but she has also given it a lovely little plot. Quite often I can’t stand reading counting books to my boy as the storyline is minimal or , as is more regularly the case, non existent. Maris has managed to combine the learning and story element perfectly in My Big Tree and I can see this book becoming a firm story time favourite in our house. If you are looking for something new to read with your little one then you should definitely give My Big Tree a read.

A  bit about the author.

Maria Ashworth volunteers her time when she’s not writing for the Maud Marks Library Friends Board in Katy Texas where she serves as President, as well as a Member-At-Large for the Friends of the Harris County Library. She’s a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Some of Ms. Ashworth’s picture books and middle grade novels manuscripts have been nominated as finalists in several contests. She’s published a handful of short stories through contests and a women’s anthology.
